Research at the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute primarily focuses on understanding the pathobiology of hepatitis B virus and related diseases. Additionally, we're developing diagnostics for early detection of liver cancer and therapeutics for the cure of chronic hepatitis B. Our research extends to investigating other RNA viruses causing hepatitis and hemorrhagic fever. We're also working on developing antiviral drugs and immune modulators to treat these viral diseases. Our research is led by faculty members with complementary expertise in virology, immunology, cancer biology, chemistry and drug development, and organized into six research programs directed by senior faculty members. In concerted efforts, our faculty and research staff are committed to translate our discoveries into therapeutics for the cure of hepatitis B and other viral diseases and diagnostics for early detection and precision treatment of cancer.

Dr. Baruch S. Blumberg and Dr. Timothy Block were instrumental in the creation of the Blumberg Institute in 2003 after spending many years researching liver disease.
Dr. Baruch S. Blumberg was a renowned physician and scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1976 for his discovery of the hepatitis B virus and the development of the hepatitis B vaccine. His groundbreaking work in the field of virology and immunology has had a profound impact on global health, significantly reducing the incidence of hepatitis B and related liver diseases.
Dr. Block has been instrumental in advancing the institute's mission to find cures for hepatitis B and liver cancer. His leadership and vision have been pivotal in fostering a collaborative research environment that encourages innovation and scientific breakthroughs in the field of liver disease
The Baruch S. Blumberg Institute manages and is located within the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center (PABC) in Doylestown, Pa.
Located in the center of the pharma belt between north New Jersey and Philadelphia, the PABC was named one of the most successful biotechnology incubators in the country in 2018.
The nonprofit life sciences incubator-accelerator offers state-of-the-art laboratory and office space to more than 50 biotechnology, pharmaceutical and research companies, as well as two nonprofits.

The Blumberg Institute is at the forefront of groundbreaking research to understand the hepatitis B virus, develop better treatments, and ultimately find a cure. Our scientists also are pioneering non-invasive methods to diagnose cirrhosis and liver cancer at earlier, more treatable stages.
