Position: Medicinal Chemistry Postdoctoral Associate

Job Description:

The Baruch Blumberg Institute is dedicated to advancing research and knowledge in the field of hepatitis B and liver diseases. The Institute was founded in 2003 and today is a leading center for translational research in hepatitis B, liver cancer and related diseases.

The Blumberg Institute is located within the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center (PABC), which is a 10-acre, four building, 150,000 square foot biotech incubator facility in Doylestown, Pa.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a motivated and passionate synthetic organic chemist to join the laboratories of Dr. Dimitar Gotchev, Professor of Drug Discovery and Development at the Baruch Blumberg Institute.

The ideal candidate will be able to interpret experimental data and propose alternative synthetic approaches to achieve desired outcomes.

As a member of our medicinal chemistry team, you will have the opportunity to gain expertise in small molecule target design and get significant exposure to the holistic drug discovery process through interactions with colleagues across multiple disciplines. We will also provide support in training and development materials to help you start your career within the pharmaceutical industry.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute multi-step syntheses, optimizing and troubleshooting synthetic methods to provide small molecule heterocyclic and peptidic drug candidates for biological testing
  • Interpret experimental data, from a variety of analytical techniques, with a high degree of reliability and accuracy
  • Exercise good judgement to prioritize work, considering feasibility, priorities and project impact
  • Present and share results within the group and project team
  • Write manuscripts for publication and present findings at conferences

Key Skills:

  • Expert in the theoretical and practical aspects of synthetic chemistry (synthesis, purification and analytical characterization)
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective time management skills
  • High levels of safety awareness, personal integrity and ethics

Education and Experience:

A PhD degree in organic or medicinal chemistry (or close to completion) and the ability to demonstrate expertise in a wide range of methods and techniques in organic synthesis, including areas such as multistep target preparation, catalysis, methodology and mechanistic study is required.
